Age restrictions on events?

Postby angel » Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:46 pm

So maybe I’m opening a huge can of worms here, but I’m curious to see how people feel…

I’m going to the Dig Deep cruise on Saturday, which is an over 25’s event. Those of us going are all aged up to 35(+!).

Now, I love events for the older crowd. They have a different vibe, with people who have similar background, understanding and attitude towards clubbing, and I feel like I fit in a lot more than I do at subbies nowadays.

And the age restriction makes it heaps more tempting for those of us who are older to get out and relax without being surrounded by people 15 years younger … the same as being 25 and not wanting to be at 'All Ages' events anymore.
And it is awesome to be catered for.

But does it piss off those under 25’s?

Two things:

1) QUICK REPLY IS BACK! Yay.

2) Elitism is shit. Either put a private party on, or allow everyone to go. Otherwise you're about as respectable as a floating turd in a broken toilet.

I've never heard of this sort of thing, why is it only over 25?

I've been to parties were only people who know what the event is are allowed in, really stops tools getting in. I think to a point quality control is a good thing, though maybe not judged by the age barrier.

Why does this remind me of Futuramas ultra porn the professor couldnt get anymore

Nah I think it's a good idea.

I go out now and just at different points, my fave tunes are the 2000-2005 era, which I don't hear out.
back then clubbing was my week, now it's not, and going out all the time with crowds that are still like that. Umm, just feel out of place.

I think it's a really good idea.

I dont have a problem with dance music events being 18+ due to the unfortunate associations they have with drug "culture", especially after playing at one of the Utopias last year and seeing the 15/16 year olds and what they get up to. Even though they are pounded at school with the risks involved with taking drugs, it seems that the message doesn't get across, probably because they aren't quite mature enough to realise that they ARE doing harm.

As for the 25+ cruise. i dont really think i have a problem with it. Its a way for the older crowds to go out to an event that they feel is actually aimed at them, and they dont have to feel like they are way past their time with a bunch of 18 year olds running around acting like 18 year olds. There's so many events on, that one here and there putting an extra restriction on like this is not going to rock the boat too much.

Once upon a time I was seventeen years old. Unlike other kids my age, I had a very different taste in music. I liked trance. I bought tracks like I were a fat kid in a candy store, I downloaded sets which dried up my bandwidth, and I saved my dollars to buy a pair of CDJ800's (which, admittedly, are in the hands of Rossco now, but that is another matter). If people's passions are measured by their dedication, then I was more entitled to brand the title "trance fan" than majority of my over 18 contemporaries.

The biggest problem I faced at that age was not being able to be actively engaged in the culture. I was not allowed to see the acts and musicians I celebrated because I was not allowed into the venues in which they played. Besides the online engagement I received through this website, and later the Trancetribe events I "snuck" into at ARQ and VBar, I was excluded.

I find it interesting that people support the idea of a 25+ event, especially considering the state of the current trance scene. Exclusion is not an option. The more people you push away from an event, the more you choke this scene of its much needed exposure. I suppose this is less of problem if international or big-name acts are kept off the bill, but like I and Rysh said earlier that is generally the conditions for a private party. However, any club night or headlined act which excludes people for such an arbitrary reason such as age is counter-productive. It perpetuates an elitist stigma and anchors any chance for a revival.

This is why I vote no on proposition 24.

But paradoxically - by putting an age restriction on it, you are actually opening the event up to a heap of people that wouldn’t normally attend…. people who also might not be reached via a private party….

I can see both sides. I still love going out to events and understand it’s unfair to exclude just because of your age, but I also personally hate being surrounded by 18 year olds who behave differently on a dancefloor than most 30+ year olds.
That is why I didn’t go to Future, or now don’t go to anything at Home, Subbies etc.

So even if there isn’t a physical upper age restriction on all other events, there is definitely an invisible one.

It certainly isn’t choking the scene – it’s sold out ;)

I dunno, it's a tough one, and as you say Angel, there are definitely pros and cons to both sides.

I like being in a slightly older crowd as there are (generally) fewer messy people, a higher proportion of shirt wearing, and more courtesey (sp). BUT i also like sharing good music with young people..

I find trance kind of cool in that it can unite so many people from so many backgrounds in an appreciation of music. It's great seeing someone in the crowd you don't know, loving the track, and mouthing 'fuck yeah' or something else lame across the dancefloor, and seeing it come back.. that sort of thing, to me, is what i love. That goes across the age ranges, but i find young people tend to do it a bit more - i think excluding them would have more of a negative impact on a party than any benefits provided.

Edit: Oh, i'm 27 years young btw :)

all my friends that I go out with are 30+. never really stopped us going to festivals etc where there are young crowds, but I guess we tend to attend things that naturally have slightly older crowds anyway.

It's been common in singapore for ages to have 23+, 25+ at pubs and clubs, but they only ever applied to guys.

Yeah, not really a fan of age restrictions.

Age is just one factor in how people behave/look.

I know plenty of people who are 20 that look 28, and heaps of people that are 35 and look 25.

I also know plenty of 35 year olds (or older) that act like teenagers, and plenty of teenagers who are incredibly mature.

Can you imagine? A sign out the front of a club that said: "You must be this tall to trance."

jeez mate... you'll struggle to get recognition for goodies anecdotes in here... no doubt at all you'll get into an over 25s event... you'd easily clear an over 35s event too. ;)

must be about 8 years since I went to a party at north head call eckythump. All the ignorant kids thought it was a drug reference, only us dignified elders knew it was all about the black pudding
